Estrella de numerosas telenovelas, incluyendo un reciente giro como el legendario Zorro-Meier ha sido un ídolo para las legiones de admiradores. Pero él está decidido a dejar la pequeña pantalla detrás de los sueños cruzados en Hollywood. "No estoy seguro de lo que el siguiente paso será", dice. "Lo único que puedo asegurar es que no se verá en otra telenovela".

Técnicamente, Meier rompió en Hollywood con su debut en 1993 en Watchers III, película de culto director Roger Corman. Ese esfuerzo fue seguido en el cine latino con No le digas a nadie, cinco años después. En 2000, actuó en Ciudad de M, y el año pasado enganchó el papel protagonista en Valentino y el clan del Can. Meier levantó su perfil aún más en 2005 en La mujer de mi hermano. Pero la mayor parte de su trabajo ha sido en las telenovelas que le han convertido en un nombre familiar.

Crecer en el Perú, Meier no fue ajeno a los reflectores. Su madre, Gladys Zender se convirtió primero en Perú Miss Universo en 1957, y su padre, Antonio Meier, es el alcalde del distrito de San Isidro de Lima.

Su papel protagónico en un comercial de pasta de dientes a los 13 marcó su entrada oficial en la actuación, un concierto seguido dos años más tarde con una Coca-Cola.
Él recuerda que en su juventud obsesionado con el cine extranjero, admirando el trabajo de Harrison Ford y Sean Connery. Pero era el día de vuelta de Lewis como un tetrapléjico en la película Mi pie izquierdo que ayudó a Meier cuenta de un actor potencial para tocar un público emocionalmente. Hasta entonces, Meier había visto actuar como un simple trabajo con algunos extras agradable en el camino.

¿Ya eres un habitual de las telenovelas, su paradigma personal totalmente cambiado cuando se hizo sobre el papel como la lucha contra la connivencia y bisexuales-héroe en No le digas a nadie en 1998. El carácter de riesgo le atraía por su potencial para destacar como un "grave" Annette Moreno. "No era el papel principal, pero un papel muy importante."

Meier impregnado a su personaje con una siniestra sonrisa siempre presente que fue inspirado por el retrato mimo Marcel Marceau, de un hombre que es incapaz de eliminar una máscara que representa la risa. La preparación mental y física de Meier dado sus frutos: "La película no fue un éxito, pero por primera vez, los críticos empezaron a decir que era un buen actor."

Después de haber logrado ya el reconocimiento del nombre en toda América Latina, Meier, padre de tres hijos, ha iniciado este año un perfume vendido por catálogo en su país natal, Perú, así como en México, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala, Bolivia, Chile y El Salvador. Se alude a artículos de moda que lleva su nombre el futuro, pero no ofrece detalles.
Es en la actuación en la que Meier al milímetro sus esperanzas.

Evidentemente, el capítulo de la telenovela de su vida aparece cerrado. "Creo que he llenado mi cuota de melodrama. Tal vez el cambio de nombres y personajes, pero siempre es la misma cosa ", dice. "Yo respeto el formato de novela, pero tengo que hacer algo más. Me siento más comprometido con mi actuación ".

Peruvian heartthrob Christian Meier leaves telenovelas behind in his quest to make it big in film

Having recently moved to Los Angeles to focus on a film career, Christian Meier —known as the George Clooney of Latin America—is ready for his close-up.

Star of numerous telenovelas—including a recent turn as the legendary Zorro—Meier has long been a heartthrob to legions of adoring fans. But he is determined to leave the small screen behind for crossover dreams in Hollywood. “I’m not sure what the next step will be,” he says. “The only thing I can assure you is I won’t be seen in another telenovela.”

Technically, Meier broke into Hollywood with a 1993 debut in Watchers III by cult film director Roger Corman. That effort was followed in the Latin cinema with No le digas a nadie five years later. In 2000, he starred in Cuidad de M, and last year snagged the title role in Valentino y el clan del can. Meier raised his profile further in 2005 in La mujer de mi hermano. But most of his work has been in telenovelas that have made him a household name.

Growing up in Peru, Meier was no stranger to the spotlight. His mother, Gladys Zender became Peru’s first Miss Universe in 1957, and his father, Antonio Meier, is the mayor of the San Isidro district of Lima. His starring role in a toothpaste commercial at 13 marked his official entry into acting, a gig followed two years later with a Coca-Cola commercial.

He recalls being fixated in his youth with foreign cinema, admiring the work of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery. But it was Day-Lewis’ turn as a quadriplegic in the movie My left Foot that helped Meier realize an actor’s potential to touch an audience emotionally. Until then, Meier had viewed acting as simply a job with some nice perks along the way.

Already a staple on telenovelas, his personal paradigm fully shifted when he took on the role as the conniving and bisexual anti-hero in No le digas a nadie in 1998. The risky character appealed to him for its potential to spotlight him as a “serious” thespian. “It was not the leading role, but a very important role.”

Meier imbued his character with a sinister, ever-present grin that was inspired by mime Marcel Marceau’s portrayal of a man who is unable to remove a mask that represents laughter. Meier’s mental and physical preparation paid off: “The movie was not a blockbuster, but for the first time the critics started to say I was a good actor.”
Having already achieved name recognition throughout Latin America, Meier, the father of three children, this year launched a cologne sold via catalog in his native Peru as well as in Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala, Bolivia, Chile and El Salvador. He hints at future fashion items bearing his name, but offers no details.
It is in acting on which Meier pins his hopes. Clearly, the telenovela chapter of his life appears closed. “I think I’ve filled my quota of melodrama. Maybe the names and characters change, but it’s always the same thing,” he says. “I respect the novela format, but I need to do something else. I’m feeling more committed to my acting.”

CAUCHO, a kis hülye bandatag - õt ölték meg a börtönben most... Az volt a feladata, hogy Ángel ellen valljon, hogy õ volt a banda feje, mindenrõl õ tehet... de ezzel magát is feladta, önként börtönbe vonult egyetlen esztendõre, s amikor majd az letelik, rengeteg pénz lesz a jutalma... elhitte a balga, pedig Hierro már a vallomását követõ 5. percben közölte: már nincs rá szükség!
